Why a Doula?
Doulas and Dads
A common concern among fathers who wish to be present at the birth of their child is that a doula will "take away from" the father's experience at the birth. Our hope is nothing further from that reality. Our hope and goal as your doula is to enhance your experience. Presumably, you have been to as many births as you have children. Our experience is meant to reassure you, instill confidence in you, and allow you to be as active a partner in the birth as possible. All those labor positions and details discussed in childbirth class? Can be difficult for you to spontaneously recall in the emotion of the moment. We're there to help you remember, to help you be the support person mom needs. All those questions you might have that you're afraid to ask? We're there to answer them, even before you muster the courage to ask. And all those words mom might say to you in the height of labor? We're there to reassure you that it's nothing personal and that you are, in fact, doing a fantastic job supporting her just by being there. Your job as a labor support person is not an easy one. We're there to help you do the best job you can.
Finally, you might think a doula's presence is simply redundant. You think, "I'm here. Her care provider is here. What would a doula add to the mix?" The answer to your question is: a lot. Without a doula, YOU are the only constant source of support for the laboring mom. The doctor, nurse or midwife is not always there for the entire duration of the labor. A doula's constant presence can simply provide relief for you to step out, get a snack, or take a short nap if necessary. A doula will let you participate in the labor and birth as you desire, and then fill in any gaps, if there are any, to ensure that mom's needs are met. You know your partner's personality, likes, dislikes, and needs better than anyone else in the room. A doula can bring knowledge about childbirth and the birthing environment's policies into the equation. Together, doula and dad make a fantastic team of support for the laboring mom.
"I wanted to play an active role in the birth of [our children]. Lara gave me the freedom and space to share the experience with my wife while providing support and guidance when I needed it the most." -- D.W.
"Kristy was wonderful at our birth and my husband and I highly recommend her. We were initially uncertain about having a doula, but Kristy's presence convinced us that another caring and informed person in the room is indispensable! Her relaxed composure, knowledge about the birthing process, and hands-on approach (when needed) helped us to flow through the birthing experience with confidence. Additionally, Kristy's support before and after the birth provided much reassurance and information, helping to ease us through those critical periods." -- M.C.
